Reputation Management Emancipation Proclamation - 10 Ways to “Own Yourself” Online
If you're new here, you may want to learn more about me, introduce yourself or check out my best posts. Thanks for visiting!

After having a nice recent conversation with Jeff Liebert lately, I read his fantastic post in the WMW supporter’s forum about Are Businesses and People Adapting to the WWW Publicity Machine? As a brief aside, he had a note about declaring his emancipation proclamation for owning his own name online, so I thought I’d give a few tidbits, based on some of the stuff I’ve done. I had that same AHA! moment several years ago, when I noticed my resume online ranking for my name, and decided it was time to take a more proactive approach. Google results are your new resume whether you’re going on a date, getting a job, or representing your company. Reputation management is the new personal branding. Here’s some tips on emancipating your reputation. It’s not EASY - but it’s better than having a video of someone singing bad karoake ranking for your name.
1. Register your name on Naymz, Linkedin, Myspace, Facebook, Squidoo, Digg and other social media sites.
I repeat this often for good reason. These are great places to start for low competition names. If your name is more common, you will need to get a bit more creative with how you use these.
2. Have a friend interview you.
Do a reciprocal interview, or triangle link exchange interview if necessary.
3. Volunteer to write an article on something you’re good at.
Most sites would love to have some unique content (myself included). Ask them to give you a bio, and link to some of the sites in #1, or embed links yourself.
4. Own your .com, .net, and .org.
At minimum you should own one of these. Is your name Joe Smith? Tack something on the end. JoeSmithblog.com or Joe-smith.net. Don’t be afraid to get a little creative if you have to, just make sure your name is in the domain. Write a couple pages about yourself, put up some pictures.
5. Start a new site or 3 and put your name in the title tag.
Repeat above with alter egos or domain names you thought were cool and registered during a weak moment. Put them to use. Hosting is cheap. Be sure to put your name in the title, url, and any other place you can cram it.
6. Do a couple videos or make a podcast
You can do it with a freakin’ digital camera if you’re really lazy. With universal search, they show up right in the serps. Most industries have some podcasts now - the hosts are always looking for guests, be proactive and pitch a show idea to them.
7. Put a picture up, and make sure to use proper alt text and a caption
Bam! You’re optimized for image search. To be safe, hotlink to it from a couple different places
8. Sign up on a couple forums - Use your REAL name!
Why use an alter ego if you’re going to be a responsible community member anyhow? (you can always sign up with an alter ego for flaming and trolling)
There’s actually an interesting discussion of the topic of using your own name on message boards in the WMW supporter’s forum.
9. Do a press release about how you did something.
You just built a website! You just joined facebook! You just sneezed! Yeah! Yea it’s shameless. You’re optimizing for your name here you remember.
10. Speak at an industry event, local event, or at the local library
You’ll likely get a bio page and a link - and links rule.
Important notes:
- Quit being paranoid - I’m looking in your general direction tin foil hatters - I was that way too - accept it - people will google you, and you might as well be proactive
- Look for places you can publish where your name ends up in the title tag.
- The search results for your name is likely not that competitive unless you have a very common name.
- Use your name in urls, titles, headings, etc, whenever possible. Have a look at important keyword use factors.
- If you have a common name, focus on optimizing a single page versus owning EVERY page in the search result. Use the same techniques, but be sure to link them all back to your targeted high power hub page.
- Another technique with a common name would be to associate a location like Albany, NY or Frankenmuth, MI with your name.

Absolutely spot on, as usual. If you’re not proactive about dominating your space, you’re most likely going to find yourself having to be reactive at some point down the road.

Things that suck about rep management for your name
Having a famous UK DJ share your name
Having a famous song writer who works with Elton John and Bob Dylan share your name
Having a 70’s teen idol share your name
If you are unlucky enough to have a name that related to someone in the pop culture, tv or entertainment world, life is difficult and PPC bidding becomes very cost prohibative

I imagine these tips would also work well with new companies that have some quirky names.
BTW, I share my name with the Chair of British Association of Human Rights. And I pwn that guy on the SERPS.

I just did a post a few days ago (see signature link) about why it is important for a Brand’s reputation that they have an affiliate program. Sorry for the plug, but you don’t need to go to the site. The gist of it is that comparison affiliate sites want the visitor to buy the product that they get a commission on. So if your brand doesn’t have an affiliate program and the competitor does - guess which product is getting bashed and which is getting praised?

Hey Everett,
That was a great post - for those wondering:
http://www.firstpagefitness.com/blog/2007/07/05/every-brand-needs-an-affiliate-program-for-reputation-management/
I actually stumbled across it shortly after doing mind. That had really never dawned on me as an advantage of affiliate marketing, but it definitely makes sense. One of the drawbacks, is you raise the competition level for branded terms though.
Great idea in any event, I had it all set to go in the friday favorites even before you wrote in. It’ll go up then, and is definitely relevant to the above topic.

I was VERY apprehensive (read paranoid) about making myself ’searchable’ for many years after another ‘Ryan Lash’ in Michigan (who also had a bit of a pain killer habit) tried to convince me we distant cousins and get enough personally identifiable info (ie pic, address, etc) to literally ‘recreate’ me in MI.
Good thing I hadn’t just fallen off the ole turnip truck or who knows what I would have done Crisis PR-wise to fix that by battling with whatever number of banks he would have gone and setup new accounts at. Since then I have set up Google alerts for ALL of my companies’ names and aggressively gone after any social sites that we can add our names to, 1st.
My SEO firm does the same internally for any ‘reputation management’ SEO gigs we are engage in.

(Hint: It’s why I occasionally link from this blog to my Flickr photos, my Yelp profile, and my other social media profiles.) Then I decided not to post it and deleted the whole thing because I thought it would sound way too vain. Heh. Heh. So now Todd goes and gives away the golden egg, telling everyone exactly how to do it: Reputation Management Emancipation Proclamation - 10 Ways to “Own Yourself” Online. Todd, a good post indeed. I think a lot of people do brand management w/o really thinking about it. They do so merely by signing up here and there. However, in a very competitive industry you have to be much more proactive (as you’ve stated), finding these types of sites that will allow you to keep the naysayers out of the Top 10 for your brand. Just yesterday, a spam blog post about the company I work for crept into the Top 10 for our brand. I busted my arse off yesterday updating a little bit here and a little bit there. Today, the listing is out of the Top 10. NICE!

This has got to be a challenge in this age of “all the good domain names are taken”.
As companies get more creative in their names they become much more susceptible to exact search matches.
My best example is the new Sprint Telco AKA Embarq - the number 11 Google spot is some guy’s profile on DP.
For instance, my blog currently has #1 G & Y ranking for [creative name withheld] CEO. It can’t last, and we’re slipping for [creative name withheld] without the CEO.
And all this with very little intent to rank - it’s the problem of the creative name.
I agree with Will Chritchlow above http://www.stuntdubl.com/2007/07/11/reputation-management/#comment-266298 I’d be interested in your thoughts on corporate rep management.

These are all great “pro-active” tips that the seller can control, and should be employed. I also believe that “Reputation Management” has a lot to do with “Setting Realistic, Deliverable, and Measurable Expectations”. If a person or company wants to truly “Own Themselves”, then communicating brand “expectations” properly is key. Keep up the good work, Todd.

I used a great trick to kill 2 birds with one stone. The two birds were:
- people trust other people’s opinions more than your own.
- other people’s websites can have more link authority than your own websites.
In my case, I noticed a cool SES bio page from a past speaking gig, and decided that this should be my #1 result. It was already page 1, so a couple text links was all it took:

Todd - awesome tips. Its important to find where you have information about yourself on the web and manage that information. Sometimes you discover a lost social network profile from years ago that may need to be updated, especially if its getting indexed by google. Building positive content around your name - via social networks, blogs, etc. - is key.
