Yellow Page Optimization

How many AAA companies do you know of? AAA insurance did it most notably with insurance. Insurance is competitive. You need any angle you can get. I think the roots of search optimization can be traced to this. This is the mindset. This is the school of thought in action. Gaining an advantage in the alpha-sort (thanks to Michael for the the techie-marketing terminology) is one of a handful of ways that you can increase your advantage in the world of optimization. This is beyond SEO - this is a marquee example of the school of thought that sets good SEO’s above those who still work on meta tags and creating reciprocal links. This is the school of thought that gives creative thinkers an advantage in any marketplace that they dive into. If you can’t figure out what I’m talking about - keep writing those title tags and meta descriptions. If you can, keep it at the forefront of your thought process when implementing creative campaigns - just be sure to spread a little link love if you engage in a little "yellow page optimization". Despite the simplistic nature - it so often gets overlooked. Keep your eyes peeled. Opportunities abound (and that doesn’t mean you need to post ‘em to the world the second you find them either:) **Despite the fact that I like this simple technique - it might also be a good label for the really BASIC optimization that most folks think of when they hear SEO (metas, titles, kw copy, etc.) - It could also be the type of people you’d FIND if you looked in the yellow pages under “search engine optimization” (yellow page optimizers). Hopefully it’ll take on a bit of a double meaning for people that “get it” - kinda like “Forget about it!”

Friday Favorites 1/26/07

I missed last week - so I’m catching up on favorites - here’s the folks that earned a link with stundubl baiting - and yes Brian, I thoroughly condone the term link baiting - mainly because it is a different school of thought from those old school "branding wankers"

Did I miss stuff? I’m busy working now folks and try not to read all those great blogs out there as much:) What else is good in the world of the web?

Best Advice I’ve Ever Received

I thought about this over the past 24 hours, since I saw Scott’s post, and I really couldn’t pinpoint one piece of life (or even SEO) advice that stood out as the very best in that time period (I’m sure it will dawn on me shortly after posting). Lots of GOOD advice, lots of FUNNY advice, but the overall best advice I was given was probably from whoever convinced me to attend my first pubcon (I wish I could properly credit them). In retrospect, I can look back to the first conference I attended as a big catalyst as a turning point in both my career, and line of thinking. For those who have questioned whether or not they should attend one - you definitely should. Don’t let $$ be the reason you don’t because it is worth every penny. I have paid my own way to several, and they are definitely worth it for the relationships and contacts I have made that have been extremely valuable on both personal and professional levels. You can’t put a price tag on having a network of like-minded people that you can count on to help answer difficult questions, and bounce ideas off of. Without that, you are stuck on an island. I like the idea anyways, of offering the best advice you’ve been given, so figure I’d help to spread it. Feel free to comment here, or create a post of your own - just be sure to credit Scott for a good idea. Michael’s also given his best advice.

Google Custom Search for Search Engine Marketing Sites

I’ve been meaning to do this for quite some time now, but Lee’s fantastic list of sites made it all the easier. I thought it’d be useful for research for posts and such to have a custom search based on those SEO sites. You can check it out here. It’ll also be on the right hand site under search for future use.

Shameless Solicitation for MyBlogLog Community and MBL Security Issue

Yes - it’s shameless, but I’m not above it. Hell, most of you think I’d hack my own site for links (kidding, kidding) Please join mybloglog community. I can’t honestly say there is much in it for you except a sincere thank you:) The truth is, I just wanna see if I can get up in the ranks of Graywolf, who has cracked the top 50. I also wanted to take this opportunity to post about a security issue that Jusso thankfully alerted me to. Make sure to upgrade your “MyAvatars” plugin if you are running it on your site. The old version includes your users “mailto” address (not cool). For more on the problem, see Jusso’s post, and download the latest version of myAvatars.

Is my advice if you’d like to keep from getting hacked. Just wanted to say a quick thanks to all the folks who took the time to let me know there was a problem (and to Mike for helping me get up and running quickly - it probably would have taken me weeks). To the folks who thought it was linkbait, I can appreciate skepticism, but you might want to tip your BS meters a bit further back towards “faith in humanity” - life is more enjoyable that way. Ironically enough, I was having lunch with Michael Gray when I got the news, so I’ll let him tell the story (or you can check out the blow-by-blow at threadwatch, so I can get back to work:)
