I started this post a while back, and thought I’d toss the idea out even though it’s far from complete. Maybe some other day.
Justilien had a nice post about asking your customers to help you build your business with links. I really like the idea, and here’s why. The RETAIL value of something is what a consumer (link seller/ customer in this case) will be looking at. The wholesale cost is going to be anywhere from 20 - 75% LESS than what it is normally sold for. Giving a gift certificate in trade for links means that you’ll get that DISCOUNTED from the cost of your link acquisition. I’m sure there are LOTS of bloggers (or students perhaps?) willing to dole out some link love for a free gift certificate from your shop if it’s something they are interested in. Pay in gifts not in cash! It’s the best kind of online marketing strategy there is: simple and effective.
Learn the value of a link, and you’ll be more willing to dish out a couple bucks for some good ones. You’ll also realize how good of a deal you’re getting when you use things like gift certificates as the purchase power for those wonderful wonderful links.
