I say the best rule of thumb is to optimize like a drunk guy would. Don’t leave a pattern.” - seomike

Do:
-Mix your anchor text
-Get links from unique IP ranges
-Buy quality relevant text links
-Use tools such as: Google Sets, Ontology tools, Clush.com suggestions, DaveN’s G Synonym Tool, and the Overture search tool to find related words to mix in your anchor text, headings, and titles.
-Deep link to the important sections of your website

Don’t
-Use your targeted keyword repeatedly on your targeted page
-Buy a bunch of run of site links
-Buy a bunch of high profile text links when your site is two weeks old
-Suddenly have 10k pages to your site
-Increase your number of backlinks 10x overnight
-Get a bunch of reciprocal or even three way links

Yep. Basic stuff. Yep…break a basic and kill your site. Plan from the beginning and do things right.
