Are Directories Getting Thrashed on Google?

This is an interesting topic goin' on at threadwatch. Google popularized the niche directory business model with the way their algorithm ranked results and the introduction of adsense. Since then, the proliferation of questionable directories has increased as "on-theme" one time purchase links are a hot commodity. The question is...is there anything WRONG with these directories in the eyes of the almighty G? Will directories continue to pass Page Rank? Will they be worth the submission costs? Will they continue to rank? Will directory become a "poison word"? Lots of unanswered questions here, and there will be a lot of disappointed SEO's and Internet marketing consultants if directories fall from grace.
