MarketingVOX is Cool. Spyware and Government Legislation is Not.

This is probably a great time to mention what a wonderful resource Marketing VOX is. They have great stories on a DAILY basis, and are on the bleeding edge of the industry news. One of my new favorite resources for e-marketing news.

This is a story on a new piece of legislation regarding spyware. While I like the idea of punishing the schmucks that try to insert their ads into my Google results, and other such madness, I am a bit nervous about bureaucrats deciding what is "ethical" in regards to Internet marketing. I think the market does a fair job of policing itself, especially when programs like SpyBot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware. This software is available for free, and assists those who don't know enough to not say yes to popup boxes on unsavory sites.

I understand that no one likes spyware (myself included), but it is somewhat off putting that often-times technologically challenged politicians are creating this legislation. This is just another case of our government taking away the personal responsibility of citizens. It is not hard to download anti-spyware software. It is not hard to learn about it. It is not hard to say no to popups from shady sites and not open e-mail attachments from Anna Kournikova (okay...that might be a bit more difficult, but you see what I'm saying...She's probably NOT going to be e-mailing you). Be responsible for your computer, and pass on help and education on spybot rather than spending tax dollars on restrictive laws that will ultimately damage the economy...I think the market is perfectly capable to right itself in this case. The altruistic releases of anti-spyware software are a testament to this.
